Canadian alt-country outfit The Deep Dark Woods have long been good at hitting you right where it hurts, and they’ve done it once again with “Gonna Have A Jubilee,” the latest single off of their album Jubilee. The track is both delicate and morose, perfect for an afternoon spent contemplating the meaning of life as you stare out the window. The band filmed a live version of the song, which adds yet another layer to an already sonically and emotionally dense track.

Though the title may suggest otherwise, the “Jubilee” is hardly celebratory. “I wrote ‘Jubilee’ when I got home to Mortlach [Saskatchewan] after a long American tour a couple years back,” says singer Ryan Boldt.
“Not many people showed up to the shows, and we were all down and wondering why we were doing what we were doing… The song basically says that if you don’t play music with a dance beat, have a cool haircut and wear makeup, you’re going to have a really tough time getting young people out to your shows,” he says. “Like the old song ‘This World Is Not My Home,’ ‘Jubilee’ references ‘the afterlife’ in the sense of ‘I’m gonna have a party when I get called home.’”
