Marie Miller grew up in the Shenandoah Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and a long history of traditional folk music. She joined her family’s bluegrass band at the age of 12 and quickly became a familiar face on Virginia’s festival circuit, sharing lead vocals with her sister while bouncing between mandolin, guitar and bouzouki. She started writing her own tunes, too, mixing her on-the-job folk training with the modern influence of alt-rockers like Michelle Branch.

A decade later, Miller whittles that folk-pop sound into something sharp and melodic with her new EP, You’re Not Alone.

“It represents me and my songwriting in a very wholistic way,” she says. “From the love song “Such A Shame,” which really is a love song for my home state Virginia, to the last track “Unconscious,” inspired by the Greek philosopher Plato. Each song seems to say, ‘This is Marie Miller; she’s that dreamer, reader girl from Virginia who doesn’t like to be alone.’”
