U2 sat down with their old friends MTV recently, where they discussed the idea of releasing a second album this year, to compliment the sales success of No Line on the Horizon. The band had hinted at a second record before, claiming they had amassed enough material from their recording sessions with Brian Eno, and before that, with Rick Rubin.

Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. gets to the heart of the matter: “It wasn’t like we fell out with Rick – it just wasn’t the right time for us, It went really well. The songs were fantastic. It would have been great for Atomic Bomb … [the songs] weren’t right for this.

“We needed to get outside of our comfort zone. Brian Eno doesn’t like U2 – he’s not built to. So when we go and work with him we go through a slightly different filter, ’cause we’re trying to impress him.”

“What people don’t understand is that there was lots going on before … a lot of stuff had gone on,” referring to how long it took the band to release an album after completing How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb in 2004. “It’s not like we were sitting around. So when we even got to Morocco and we generated a lot of stuff, what you hear on this album is what we could get to. There’s an album’s worth, at least. Will it be released? We don’t know. But there is an album’s worth of material … that’s more the point.”
