Don’t get us wrong: we love honky-tonk music and the high lonesome sound of bluegrass. We dig the Station Inn and all the cats that can “pick more notes than the number of ants on a Tennessee ant hill.” We revere the Opry and all the facets of the Nashville sound. But, when it comes right down to it, we prefer our country with a bluesy edge and dash of blue-eyed soul.
And the music of Molly Martin fits that bill perfectly. Now living in East Nashville, Martin springs from the swamps of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, where she was weaned on Delta blues, spirituals and the jazz and brass bands of nearby New Orleans. Her first full-length album, Somewhere Between, welds all those early influences into a truly “Americana” sound. Stream the album below and let yourself be transported to a front porch in the coastal south, among the Spanish moss, Sazerac in hand.
