Keep It Hid is a solid first solo effort for the Black Keys vocalist/guitarist, but could use a healthier dose of surprise. Tracks like “I Want Some More” and “The Prowl” showcase Auerbach’s signature bluesy, psychedelic swagger that Keys’ fans have grown to love, but sound like b-sides from the duo’s 2008 effort Attack & Release.Label: NONESUCH

Keep It Hid is a solid first solo effort for the Black Keys vocalist/guitarist, but could use a healthier dose of surprise. Tracks like “I Want Some More” and “The Prowl” showcase Auerbach’s signature bluesy, psychedelic swagger that Keys’ fans have grown to love, but sound like b-sides from the duo’s 2008 effort Attack & Release. What truly stand out on Hid, however, are the handful that flirt with folk and emphasize Auerbach’s unique voice. Album opener “Trouble Weighs a Ton” could have easily been the product of a late night conversation between Auerbach and Ray LaMontagne-about love and loss, over cigarettes and whiskey. The delicate guitar arrangement and carefully delivered vocals of “When the Night Comes” achieve a subtle sincerity rarely heard from Keys-era Auerbach, typically known for his rock and roll wail. Auerbach’s first forays folk are successful ones. All I can say in complaint is Dan, I want some more, too.
