“Halloweenie” — Ashnikko

As the unofficial queen of Halloween, Ashnikko usually releases a new Halloween-related single every year. She’s up to six right now with the latest being released yesterday, October 11. But the first “Halloweenie” track is still a classic. Only tricks for your ass it’s Halloween, she sings in the chorus, as she frolics around with a pumpkin-headed man in the video. It’s got everything — a hip-shaking beat, clever spooky-sexy lyrics, and Ashnikko’s signature cackling laugh in the beginning.

“Cop Car” — Mitski

I get mean when I’m nervous like a bad dog, Mitksi murmurs in the opening of “Cop Car,” which was featured in the movie The Turning. She sings I will never die over and over again near the chorus, giving this song the ultimate spook factor. It’s haunting, devious, and sinister, but also full of Mitski’s clever turns of phrase. Ultimately, she knows how to creep us all out in the best way.

“Hex Girl” — Dreadlight

If you grew up in the 90s, you’d probably recognize this song from the 1999 movie Scooby-Doo! and the Witch’s Ghost. This version by Dreadlight—an all-girl hard rock band—puts a heavier spin on the Hex Girls’ main song from the film. It thumps and grinds, offset by the beautiful, sultry vocals. There’s nothing like an all-girl rock band, and the Hex Girls proved that way back in ’99. Safe to say, they drew the blueprint for many of the girl bands we have now.

“12 Foot Home Depot Skeleton” — Kitsch Club

This song by Kitsch Club is just plain fun. Remember a few years ago when Home Depot came out with their 12-foot Halloween skeleton, and everyone was rushing to get one in their front yards? Then, what do you do with a 12-foot Home Depot skeleton? Well, obviously, you dress it up for every holiday, but also, you write a song about it. I can’t find room in my budget / I can’t find room in my home / But I’ve got so much room in my heart / And I want those bones for my owntruer words were never spoken.

“Little Dark Age” — MGMT

“Little Dark Age” is a spooky, atmospheric track that will set the mood for any Halloween party. When you think of MGMT, “Kids” comes to mind, or “Electric Feel.” Their more upbeat songs, in any case. However, for Little Dark Age, the duo took a turn into a darker realm, a spookier environment for their songs to flourish. This song has a heavy bass riff and spine-tingling lyrics, with vocals often distorted to create an unearthly atmosphere.

“Skeleton Appreciation Day in Vestal, NY (Bones)” — Will Wood

Will Wood is known for his off-the-wall lyrics and themes, and this song does not disappoint. They say that beauty’s just skin deep / So please show me your / Bones bones bones, let me see your bones. Here’s a love song with a spooky backdrop, perfect for all the skeleton couples at the party—If I come home baby will you show me your bones.

“It’s Almost Halloween” — Panic! at the Disco

On October 25, 2008, Panic! at the Disco released the song “It’s Almost Halloween” with an accompanying video of the band in various costumes, performing the song in the woods. The video is goofy with a homemade feel, and the song is just as cute. It’s got a “Monster Mash” meets the Beach Boys feel to it, as this came about during the band’s folksy Pretty. Odd. phase. The video calls back to the era of emo-alternative bands making home videos at parties and backstage, which will be a healthy dose of nostalgia for anyone who used to watch those.
