1. “Coat Of Many Colors” by Dolly Parton

Dolly Parton tells one heck of a story. And that talent has been a staple part of her career since she first started way back when. “Coat Of Many Colors” is particularly good because the melody as well as the lyrics are so addicting. Parton beautifully breaks down why love is so much more important than money or material possessions. It’s a true classic, and we can understand why Parton dedicated it to her mother.

2. “Devil Went Down To Georgia” by Charlie Daniels Band

Now this would not be a halfway decent list of country songs with the best storytelling without including Charlie Daniels Band’s “Devil Went Down To Georgia”. This is about as good as it gets. Charlie Daniels penned an incredible narrative with a uniquely American flair, complete with killer fiddle solos. The song follows a young man named Johnny who beats the Devil in a fiddle-off, and in turn, receives a solid gold fiddle. “I done told you once, you son of a gun / I’m the best there’s ever been” always hits so good.

3. “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones

There are plenty of amazing songs about heartbreak in the country music world. But when it comes to country songs with the best storytelling, few songs capture the misery of having your heart broken quite like “He Stopped Loving Her Today” by George Jones.

4. “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert

We wouldn’t exactly say that Miranda Lambert is underrated. She’s one of the biggest country stars today. However, we think she deserves more credit for her ability to take a song written by other people and turn it into something uniquely her own. “The House That Built Me” was written by Allen Shamblin and Tom Douglas, and it’s one of their best songwriting credits to date. If you’ve ever loved and subsequently seen your childhood home get sold off, “The House That Built Me” might make you emotional.

This classic song tells a haunting yet fascinating story, and it’s become a bit of a classic riddle in the country music world. It’s honestly hard to decipher what Bobbie Gentry was singing about in this song, and fans around the world have tried to figure it out. What did she throw off that bridge?!

6. “Coal Miner’s Daughter” by Loretta Lynn

Loretta Lynn can tell an incredible story, and “Coal Miner’s Daughter” is one of her very best. The song is about her life growing up in Kentucky with two wonderful parents who did the best with what they had. So many listeners related to it, and the song contributed to a long and eloquent career.
