5 of the Craziest Things Pressed Into Famous Vinyl LPs

You can press pretty much anything into a vinyl record during its creation process, provided the material is small and flat enough. With that in mind, some artists have put some pretty crazy (and often gross) stuff in their album LPs. These five examples are some of the craziest things ever pressed into famous vinyl records, though we opted to leave out the nastier examples. Google at your own risk.

1. Yarn

We’ll start our list with the most tame example of the craziest things pressed into vinyl records. Experimental rock band Liars released a clear vinyl version of their 2014 album Mess On A Mission. In this version, the band had colorful pieces of yarn pressed into the center of the records. The release was a Record Day exclusive and only 1,000 copies were made. It may not be the wildest thing ever, but it’s quite artistically interesting.

2. Dead Flies

This is probably the most famous example of the craziest things pressed into famous vinyl LPs. Grunge icons Alice In Chains celebrated the 30th anniversary of their hit 1994 album Jar Of Flies with a limited release of an interesting (and kinda gross) pressing of the album, complete with real dead flies. The limited run of records sold out very fast and are now considered collectors’ items.

3. Real Marijuana Leaves

Stoner doom outfit Sleep released the original version of the album Dopesmoker back in 2003. It was one of their most successful releases, so it’s only natural that they opted to reissue the record in 2022 through Jack White’s Third Man Records. Another “natural” thing about the reissue is that the vinyls feature real marijuana leaves pressed into them. It’s creative; we’ll give them that.

4. Human Tears

This vinyl takes “emo” to a whole ‘nother level. Fall Out Boy released their album So Much (For) Stardust in 2023 and decided to put a unique spin on the vinyl version of the album. A limited edition run of vinyl records featured an infusion of the band members’ very real human tears. They even cheekily dubbed it “crynyl”. There are only 50 pressings in existence, and all of them have since sold out.

5. Blood of Celebrities

You read that correctly. Rather than showcasing the blood of their enemies, The Flaming Lips asked a few famous friends to lend their their actual blood. You know, from their bodies. The blood was then pressed into 10 copies of their record The Flaming Lips And Heady Fwends

A few famous names who opted to drain themselves for the band include Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Nick Cave, Kesha, Sean Lennon, and more. The process of making the bloody vinyl records was documented online by the band’s frontman Wayne Coyne.
