1. ‘Walk The Line’ (2005)

When it comes to iconic country music films, this biopic about Johnny Cash is a notable favorite among fans. The film follows a somewhat exaggerated depiction of country legend Johnny Cash’s rise to fame, struggles with addiction, and relationship with June Carter. Joaquin Phoenix did an amazing job portraying Cash, and his singing chops aren’t half bad, either.

2. ‘George & Tammy’ (2022)

This 2022 film stars Jessica Chastain as Tammy Wynette and Michael Shannon as George Jones. Another great biopic on this list, George & Tammy explores the tumultuous lives of a famed country music star and the young talented woman who fell in love with him. It’s beautifully written, and Chastain’s performance was particularly engaging.

3. ‘Coal Miner’s Daughter’ (1980)

Creating a film about the life of the larger-than-life Loretta Lynn was no easy feat. However, the filmmakers behind the 1980 film Coal Miner’s Daughter did a pretty stellar job. Sissy Spacek portrayed the iconic Lynn in the film, and we can’t imagine anyone else playing the country legend quite as well. The film explores Lynn’s life as a poor young singer in Kentucky, including her marriage, motherhood, and eventual rise in the country music industry.

4. ‘Crazy Heart’ (2009)

This fictional film didn’t explore the life of a real-life country star, but we’re sure at least a few country legends out there can relate to the struggle of Otis Blake (Jeff Bridges). The award-winning film follows the life of a former country music singer and his battle with addiction… and himself. Bridges and Maggie Gyllenhaal deliver career-defining performances in this film.

5. ‘Tender Mercies’ (1983)

Few Robert Duvall films are bad, but Tender Mercies is particularly good. This 1983 fictional film explores the life of a struggling country music singer named Mac Sledge. The talented artist must work at a motel to make ends meet, where he falls in love with the motel’s owner and bonds with her young son. It’s a real tear-jerker and one of the best country music films out there.
