4 Performances That Showcase the Evolution of Sabrina Carpenter’s Career
1. “Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying”
We’re starting this list at the natural point: Carpenter’s first single. “Can’t Blame A Girl For Trying” is a far cry from the innuendo filled lyricism she enjoys today, but it is an early look at the vocals and stage presence that would later make her a world renowned star. The performance below sees her revel in her Disney roots with a sanguine approach to love.
‘Cause I’m young and I’m dumb
I do stupid things when it comes to love
And even if I always end up crying
Well, you can’t blame a girl for trying
2. “Sue Me”
Flash forward a bit and we come to “Sue Me.” It was a song that took Carpenter’s career to the next level. It was touch more mature and brought in a new audience for the Disney star. In the performance below we start to see her knack for interpreting her songs like an actor would deliver a monologue. Each line is carefully poured over with expert vocals to help drive home the emotion.
So sue me
For looking too pretty tonight
Wearing your favorite color under the lights
For moving on, doing everything right
So sue me
For being good friends with your friends
And running into you the place that we met
For being something you can’t forget
So sue me
3. “Nonsense”
“Nonsense” was the catalyst behind Carpenter’s sharp rise to the top. The blithe song about a new relationship earned her a prestige she hadn’t previously experienced. She was just a rising pop star, no children’s tv vehicle in sight. The performance below is more than impressive and likely would’ve been enough to earn her pop stardom. However she decided to add in another element that helped set her apart from her peers. More on that in our next inclusion on this list.
But I can’t help myself
When you get close to me
Baby, my tongue goes numb
Sounds like bleh, blah, blee
I don’t want no one else
Baby, I’m in too deep
Here’s a lil’ song I wrote
It’s about you and me
4. “Espresso”
The thing that has really helped Carpenter excel is her retro motif. It’s perfectly in line with her playful songs and flirty demeanor. It was the final piece of the puzzle. Carpenter’s career has skyrocketed over the last year and we can only think her newfound creative direction played a large role in that. Oh yeah, and a few insatiably catchy hits don’t hurt either…Check out one of her most impressive performances of “Espresso,” below.
Now he’s thinkin’ ’bout me every night, oh
Is it that sweet? I guess so
Say you can’t sleep, baby, I know
That’s that me espresso
Move it up, down, left, right, oh
Switch it up like Nintendo
Say you can’t sleep, baby, I know
That’s that me espresso
