4 Performances That Prove Miley Cyrus Can Do Any Genre

1. “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma” ( Melanie)

For an installment of her Happy Hippie intimate performances, Cyrus delivered a cover of Melanie Safka’s “Look What They’ve Done to My Song, Ma.” This track sees Cyrus step into a ’70s alter ego. She perfectly captured the sentiment of this simple song. Moreover, her vocals played well with the lilting trill of this folk hit.

Look what they done to my song, ma
Look what they done to my song
Well, it’s the only thing that I could do half right
And it’s turning out all wrong, ma
Look what they done to my song

2. “Faithfully” (Journey)

Cyrus has proved she could do well in the rock space time and time again. Her powerful vocals seem tailor made for harder-edged material. At the tail-end of 2023, Cyrus tried her hand at Journey’s “Faithfully.” As expected, she made quick work of this power ballad. Steve Perry isn’t an easy artist to go toe to toe with. Cyrus manages to do so with ease.

They say that the road ain’t no place to start a family
Right down the line, it’s been you and me
And lovin’ a music woman ain’t always what it’s supposed to be
Oh, girl, you stand by me

3. “Jolene” (Dolly Parton)

We couldn’t leave Cyrus’ country affinity off of this list. She made her love of the genre known time and time again. Cyrus isn’t afraid to put on a little twang every now and then. Despite that not being her usual singing style, it doesn’t feel inauthentic. You wouldn’t see us complaining if she decided to make a more significant foray into country music in the future.

Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, Jolene

4. “Flowers” (Miley Cyrus)

Of course, we have to include a performance that represents Cyrus’ stellar pop career. At the end of the day, we love that Cyrus likes to experiment, but we would miss it if she decided to drop her pop inclinations all together. How would we get through a summer without a pop anthem from Cyrus? May we never know.

I can buy myself flowers
Write my name in the sand
Talk to myself for hours
Say things you don’t understand
I can take myself dancing
And I can hold my own hand
Yeah, I can love me better than you can
