4 One-Hit Wonders That Seemed To Disappear After Their Big Break (And Where They Are Now)

One-hit wonders disappear all the time, and it makes sense why. Sometimes, that one hit is all someone has to give before retiring, pursuing other endeavors, or trying really hard to be seen again without much luck. Let’s take a look at a few one-hit wonders that seemed to disappear from the public eye after their one major claim to fame!

1. Owl City

Technically, Owl City is a two-hit wonder. He made it big with “Fireflies” back in 2009, which hit no. 1 on multiple charts across the globe. He made it to the Top 5 again in 2012 with a collaborative effort with Carly Rae Jepsen called “Good Time”. “Fireflies”, though, was his only solo hit.

After those hits, though, Owl City barely charted again. So, what happened? Owl City self-released a couple of records in 2018 and 2023, and he hasn’t done much since. The bubble gum indie electronic era has more or less been left in the 2010s, so it’s not exactly surprising that the project hasn’t seen much life in recent years.

2. Michelle Branch

One-hit wonders disappear all the time, but Michelle Branch’s talent was just too good for her to disappear like that. She made it big with “All You Wanted” in the US, and she never got another Top 10 hit in the US to match it. Though, “Everywhere” did pretty well at no. 12 in the US and charted even higher in other countries back in 2001.

Technically, Branch is another two-hit wonder, as her short-lived band The Wreckers had a no. 1 hit back in the day as well. But as a (very talented) solo artist, she only had one Top 10 hit in the US.

Branch’s most recent release was The Trouble With Fever in 2022. Since the early 2000s, Branch has taken on a quieter life out of the public eye. She’s written some music for films and other musicians in recent years as well.

3. Duffy

Duffy’s story is a heartbreaking one, and we’re desperately waiting for a well-deserved comeback! This Welsh singer had just one no. 1 hit with “Mercy” back in 2008. After that hit came out, she more or less disappeared from the public eye.

Sadly, Duffy revealed in 2020 that her disappearance from the spotlight was due to a traumatic event that resulted in the need for extended recovery out of the spotlight. If anyone on this list deserves a comeback, it’s Duffy.

4. Elle King

One-hit wonders disappear without a trace all the time, but some still linger around in hopes of reaching their former glory. Unfortunately for Elle King, switching from pop rock to country music didn’t yield excellent results. “Ex’s & Oh’s” was a huge hit in 2014, but King hasn’t enjoyed a Top 10 hit since.

King has since pivoted to country music and released Come Get Your Wife in 2023. The album did fairly well upon its release, but it just didn’t match how crazy popular “Ex’s & Oh’s” was a decade ago.
