Music videos make iconic songs even better, and some music videos become even more famous than the songs they were made for. These three iconic music videos, in particular, were directed by famous directors who breathed some new life into the music itself. And we’d say they’re pretty unforgettable. Let’s take a look!
Videos by American Songwriter
1. “Little Of Your Love” by Haim
Paul Thomas Anderson is known for a laundry list of incredible films, from There Will Be Blood to Boogie Nights to The Master. The list goes on! Fortunately, Anderson also lent his talents to a few music videos through the years.
Most people think of “Daydreaming” by Radiohead or “Paper Bag” by Fiona Apple, but we think Anderson’s direction of “Little Of Your Love” by Haim deserves some love, too. Anderson worked with one of the Haim sisters for his somewhat controversial film Licorice Pizza, so it only makes sense that he directed one of the band’s music videos. The video feels like Anderson is experimenting with his own filmmaking a bit, but it isn’t too self-indulgent.
2. “Gold” by Chet Faker
Hiro Murai is criminally underrated, especially when it comes to music videos that were directed by famous directors. He directed television episodes for Atlanta, Legion, and Snowfall through the last decade, but his music videos are truly where his talents shine. He’s worked with Childish Gambino and Usher, among many others. We’re particularly fond of his work on “Gold” by Chet Faker.
The cinematography in this music video is incredible. The way some of the scenes are shot, complete with leg-cracking and other surreal moments, leaves viewers wondering just how they managed to do it all. Murai should definitely not be seen as an “up-and-comer” anymore; he’s proved just how good he is at creating mesmerizing, memorable scenes.
3. “Weapon Of Choice” by Fatboy Slim
Spike Jonze directed a few different music videos back in the day. “100%” by Sonic Youth and “Only One” by Kanye West are just a couple of examples. But you can’t beat the classics! Jonze, who is known for films like Being John Malkovich and Her, directed Fatboy Slim’s 2000 hit “Weapon Of Choice”.
This music video features the acting talents of none other than Christopher Walken, and it’s a truly surreal experience. Everybody needs to see it at least once.
