“Long Slow Train”

Videos by American Songwriter

monday morning, Central Station
someone died here, few hours back
too much time spent here waiting
before the metal hit the track

this lonely way of living’s got me thinking
that I never knew my dad
and how strangers on a Northern line
become the friends that I don’t have

i’m gonna ride this long slow train
close the blinds and settle back
listen to the clatter of the people and the steel
and not look back

in the quiet, through the window there’s the sunrise
feels like new as we roll past
but when the beauty fades with the passing of the day
i’ll pour some amber grace into the daybreak of my glass

i’m gonna ride this long slow train
close the blinds and settle back
listen to the clatter of the people and the steel
and not look back

for a moment I think that I could love
as the laughter of a woman makes me smile
but for now, I’ll roll another cigarette
look outside, and caress another mile

i’m gonna ride this long slow train
close the blinds and settle back
listen to the clatter of the people and the steel
and not look back
