Grandmother was a good soldier’s daughter
She towed the line like a Southern girl should
She kept her lovers
Like pearls in an oyster
You never saw her secrets
Till she said you could

Grandmother said, “Wait to marry,
Beauty’s a good song, but it’s over too fast
Losing your youth is a burden you’ll carry

So the melodies will last”

She poured out some bourbon
From a blue tinted bottle
She pushed it across to me
Weathered by love
She said, “Girl, if you’re determined to be a grown woman,
Then you’re gonna need this for the lifetime to come”

Now that I’m grown and I have a young daughter
I see my whole life in the greenest of eyes
