Here’s an exclusive preview — Griffin House performing “Barricades of Heaven,” a lyrical, nostalgic track from 1996’s Looking East that House feels deeply connected to.

“I probably listened to ‘Barricades of Heaven’ hundreds of times with my Uncle Eric driving around Cincinnati, Ohio,” House tells us. “Imagining Jackson Browne at 16, on his own and trying to find his song, was a heartbreaking and powerful symbol and image that both of us could relate to. For Eric, a businessman in Cincinnati, it was more of a metaphorical image for the way he saw his own life and how he wanted to live it.  For me it was really more literal because I did follow that path.  After an unlikely upbringing I took my guitar and lived out that mythology, on the road just trying to find my own song.

“It really came full circle for me in the studio in Austin recording ‘Barricades Of Heaven’ for a Jackson Browne tribute record because as I played the song down with the band and sang it into the microphone all I could picture were all those times driving around Cincinnati with my uncle knowing the dreams I had in my head and heart to one day make my own music for other people to drive around in the car to and dream their own dreams and live out their own mythologies.”

Nice…however it doesn’t deviate much from the original, so in one way…what’s the point. I suppose it will all depend on how the overall CD is. If they all stay this close to the original then there will not be much point in buying it (at least for me). If the other artists add their own ‘thing’ to the songs they cover then it might be interesting. Nice version though, warm voice.

Wow, I’ve never heard anyone actually sound that much like Jackson. I kinda get the comment below of “what’s the point?” but I really like his ever so slightly more laid back take on this one.

Well, I certainly don’t care if he sounds very much like Jackson. That’s a good thing in my book. And this song is always a gem. But what’s still blowing me away is that they compiled this tribute album without a contribution from Dawes. Tragic and illogical, both.

Knowing Jackson’s close relationship with Dawes, I MUST agree with you, but I see 4 other “oversites”, at least as obvious – Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Neil – all conspicuously absent! I cannot imagine they would have declined!! And Glen Frey???? I certainly HOPE there will be a Volume II !!!
