Song Premiere: Jacob Morris, “Wet Cigarette”

Jacob Morris has been busy this Fall, playing cello with Patterson Hood’s touring band and putting the final touches on his own album. Released by Cloud Recordings, an Athens-based label run by some of Morris’ Elephant 6 friends, the debut LP finds Morris stepping into the spotlight and creating his own brand of folky, off-kilter pop. Take a listen to the first single, “Wet Cigarette,” which channels everyone from the Everly Brothers to Nick Drake.

“This song was recorded with my good buddies John Fernandes, Jim Willingham and Loney John Hutchins in Nashville, USA,” Morris tells us. “I wrote it one day when I was sitting in my living room, staring at this globe of the world (U.S.S.R. included). Hence the “Australian… Indonesian…” lyrics. It looked like a face with big fat lips. The song is about disappointment and separation, like when you have exactly what you want but you can’t use it and it won’t let you be. A wet cigarette — can’t do anything with that.”
