The Kinks – “Better Things.”

Pop music is littered with break-up masterpieces, but this one rules them all, IMO. I love the generosity and affection expressed in these lyrics, and of course that indelible melody. It’s a rare break-up song that isn’t bitter, and Ray Davies has written at least two (unless “Days” is about something else).

Bonus material: But if you are looking for a bitter, angry, triumphant kinda break-up song, it doesn’t get better than Gladys Knight’s “End of Our Road.” “…I couldn’t CRY if I wanted to…”
