“Life’s an Invitation”

He was eighty when I met him
I had just turned twenty-three
And I was searching for a whole lot more
Than life was giving me
I thought I had no future
Till the night I stumbled on
That crazy old street preacher
Who the folks called Bible John
And I’d usually rush right past him
But something just snapped inside
So I turned and shouted at him
What has God done for my life?
(And he just smiled, and said)
Life’s an invitation,
You accept it or you don’t
If you sit around just waiting
For your world to change it won’t
There’s dreamers and there’s doers
And some days you’ll stand alone
But everything you want is out there waiting
You just have to accept the invitation
He said, I’m nothing much to look at
But my life, well it’s been great
Never learned to drive a car
But I’ve hitched round every state
Couldn’t pay for college
So I read and taught myself
And I’ve tried to take that knowledge
And use it, with God’s help
To cast doubt on the doubters
Who say you can’t achieve
‘Cause anything is possible
As long as you believe
(Can’t you see?)
Life’s an invitation
You accept it or you don’t
If you sit around just waiting
For your world to change it won’t
There’s dreamers and there’s doers
And some days you’ll stand alone
But everything you want is out there waiting
You just have to accept the invitation
So now I live the same as him
Been round the world and back again
I met my wife, discovered Christ
All thanks to my old friend
And the day he died he handed me his bible
Now I’ve become his number one disciple
And I’ll carry his words on
Life’s an invitation
You accept it or you don’t
If you sit around just waiting
For your world to change it won’t
There’s dreamers and there’s doers
And some days you’ll stand alone
But everything you want is out there waiting
You just have to accept the invitation
